Introducing: Howard P. Grant
Howard P. Grant provides us another week of ??firsts? with his outstanding achievements throughout his life, pioneering paths and breaking down racial barriers for future African American engineers.
His Achievements
Howard P. Grant hails from Houston, Texas, moving to California during his early childhood. Grant spent two years at University of California-Los Angeles after high school. He then transferred to University of California-Berkeley (UC-Berkeley) where his education was put on pause while he served in the Air Force. After returning from his stint in the Air Force, Grant completed his education, becoming the first African American student to graduate from UC-Berkeley??s College of Engineering. He received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1948.
Credited as the first known African American member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Howard P. Grant worked as a Civil Engineer in the Water Department for the City and County of San Francisco. In this role, Grant picked up another ??first? as the first African American Civil Engineer for the City and County of San Francisco. Grant is also the second African American Civil Engineer to be licensed by the State of California.
His Legacy Lives On
Howard P. Grant??s legacy lives on through the programs and organizations he was invested in including Engineering Societies Committee for Manpower Training, Big Brothers, Hunter??s Point Boy??s Club, and the San Francisco Urban League Scholarship Committee.
