The Institute of Transportation Engineers’ June 2013 issue of its ITE Journal featured the City of Roswell, Georgia’s “context sensitive solutions” to the cityâ??s transportation-related challenges. Qk4â??s Andy Ballerstedt played significant role in creating, designing, and implementing one of the featured solutions.
The City selected Qk4, Inc., to develop a concept for a busy commercial state route through the heart of Roswell. The Cityâ??s vision was to have something that would both calm traffic and be business friendly. Qk4â??s concept was ultimately approved and constructed. The “context sensitive solution” featured in the ITE article included using integral stamped asphalt in the center two-way left-turn lane to create a brick paver look (see images below), and constructing six small raised and landscaped median islands within the center lane to help pedestrians feel safer and add aesthetic elements. These solutions not only add safety and aesthetic elements without disrupting access to businesses, but also discourage drivers from using the center turn lane as a continuous third travel lane. Another feature of the project was the narrowing of the travel lanes by one foot each, resulting in an additional traffic calming element and four more feet of shoulder width for sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, and landscaping.
In addition to the concept plan, Qk4 prepared surveys, right-of-way plans, environmental documents, and construction documents; and provided right-of-way acquisition services and construction phase services. For more information contact Mr. Andrew Ballerstedt, PE, at 1-800-928-2222.
