Project Description
Shelbyhurst Traffic Impact Study
Jefferson County, Kentucky
The goal of this project, funded by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, was to provide improved access to the Shelby Campus while also reducing congestion at the Shelbyville Road / Hurstbourne Lane intersection.
To do so, we built two new entrances with turning lanes and signals on Hurstbourne Lane to improve access to the campus. To relieve traffic on the congested Hurstbourne Lane, we relocated the main entrance to the Shelbyhurst Campus and added new turning lanes.
Because we wanted to limit disruption during the project and quickly reap the project’s benefits, we used fast-track design and construction methods. As part of the project, we also helped coordinate utility installations and collaborated with university officials and students to maintain vehicular and pedestrian access during construction.
In addition to project engineering, we performed the traffic impact study that helped inform the design decisions that resulted in a terrific new entrance to the campus while relieving congestion along the corridor. The study also facilitated the construction of premium office space occupied by such tenants as Churchill Downs.
