The Thinker statue has been installed at University of Louisville at the head of the circle drive off Third Street since 1949. However, by 2012, time had taken its toll, and The Thinker was removed to be restored and placed on a new limestone pedestal. Qk4 reviewed the contractor’s plans for moving The Thinker to a location where the remedial work took place (pictures below). Qk4 also reviewed the proposal for reinstalling the statue on its new limestone pedestal.
The bronze statue was the first large-scale cast of Auguste Rodin’s famous original, and thus is considered to be most like the original of all casts made. Rodin supervised the casting, which was completed in 1903. “…The Thinker is back at his post, all cleaned up and ready for another 100 years of service,” said U of L President James Ramsey in an interview with the Courier-Journal.
